Olive & Popeye

ngeee~.. tajuk entry tak leh blah kan. padahal entry kali ni nk cerite sedikit pasal cik olive OIL je. popeye tak de kaitan pun.. sorry ye en.POPEYE the sailor man! : P

Return to the main topic, OLIVE OIL is the greatest exponent of monounsaturated fat, and it is a prime component of the Mediterranean Diet. Olive oil is a natural juice which preserves the taste, aroma, vitamins and properties of the olive fruit. Olive oil is the only vegetable oil that can be consumed as it is - freshly pressed from the fruit.

Types of olive oil :
Generally, olive oil is extracted by pressing or crushing olives. Olive oil comes in different varieties, depending on the amount of processing involved. Varieties include:

Extra virgin - considered the best, least processed, comprising the oil from the first pressing of the olives.
Virgin - from the second pressing.
Pure - undergoes some processing, such as filtering and refining.
Extra light - undergoes considerable processing and only retains a very mild olive flavour.

When buying olive oil you will want to obtain a high quality EXTRA VIRGIN oil. The oil that comes from the first "pressing" of the olive, is extracted without using heat (a cold press) or chemicals, and has no "off" flavors is awarded "extra virgin" status. The less the olive oil is handled, the closer to its natural state, the better the oil. If the olive oil meets all the criteria, it can be designated as "extra virgin".

What is pure and light olive oil? "Pure" olive oil is made by adding a little extra virgin olive oil to refined olive oil. It is a lesser grade oil that is also labeled as just "olive oil" in the U.S.

"Light" olive oil is a marketing concept and not a classification of olive oil grades. It is completely unregulated by any certification organizations and therefore has no real precedent to what its content should be. Sometimes, the olive oil is cut with other vegetable oils.

Olive oil's health benefits :
The beneficial health effects of olive oil are due to both its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids and its high content of antioxidative substances. Studies have shown that olive oil offers protection against heart disease by controlling LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels while raising HDL (the "good" cholesterol) levels. No other naturally produced oil has as large an amount of monounsaturated as olive oil -mainly oleic acid.

Olive oil is very well tolerated by the stomach. In fact, olive oil's protective function has a beneficial effect on ulcers and gastritis. Olive oil activates the secretion of bile and pancreatic hormones much more naturally than prescribed drugs. Consequently, it lowers the incidence of gallstone formation.

Olive oil and heart disease :
Studies have shown that people who consumed 25 milliliters (mL) - about 2 tablespoons - of virgin olive oil daily for 1 week showed less oxidation of LDL cholesterol and higher levels of antioxidant compounds, particularly phenols, in the blood.

But while all types of olive oil are sources of monounsaturated fat, EXTRA VIRGIN olive oil, from the first pressing of the olives, contains higher levels of antioxidants, particularly vitamin E and phenols, because it is less processed.

Olive oil is clearly one of the good oils, one of the healing fats. Most people do quite well with it since it does not upset the critical omega 6 to omega 3 ratio and most of the fatty acids in olive oil are actually an omega-9 oil which is monounsaturated.

Olive oil and colon cancer :
Spanish researchers suggest that including olive oil in your diet may also offer benefits in terms of colon cancer prevention. Their study results showed that rats fed diet supplemented with olive oil had a lower risk of colon cancer than those fed safflower oil-supplemented diets. In fact, the rats that received olive oil had colon cancer rates almost as low as those fed fish oil, which several studies have already linked to a reduction in colon cancer risk.

Alkisah disebalik pencarian khasiat minyak zaitun:

Dr. Hatch (Patch) Adam

Patch Adam is the partially true story of a man who believed a humanity & generosity should be part of a doctor job. i like this movie because it give me courage and spirit to be a good future doctor insyaAllah. it realized me why exactly we want to be a doctor. there are several lines in that movie which hook me up.. :)

All of life is a coming home. Salesmen, secretaries, coal miners, beekeepers, sword swallowers, all of us. All the restless hearts of the world, all trying to find a way home. It's hard to describe what I felt like then. Picture yourself walking for days in the driving snow; you don't even know you're walking in circles. The heaviness of your legs in the drifts, your shouts disappearing into the wind. How small you can feel, and how far away home can be. Home. The dictionary defines it as both a place of origin and a goal or destination. And the storm? The storm was all in my mind. Or as the poet Dante put it: In the middle of the journey of my life, I found myself in a dark wood, for I had lost the right path. Eventually I would find the right path, but in the most unlikely place.

***********

Treatment would be defined as the care of a patient seeking medical attention.
I offer them whatever help I can. Everyone who comes to the ranch is a patient and every person who comes is also a doctor. Every person who comes to the ranch is in need of some form of physical or mental help. They're patients but also every person who comes to the ranch is in charge of taking care of someone else...whether it's cooking for them, cleaning them...or even as simple a task as listening. That makes them doctors.

***********

What if one of your patients had died?
What's wrong with death, sir?
What are we so mortally afraid of?
Why can't we treat death with a certain amount of humanity and dignity and decency
Death is not the enemy, gentlemen.
If we're gonna fight a disease, let's fight one of the most terrible diseases of all...indifference.

**********
Every human being has an impact on another.
Why don't we want that in a patient/doctor relationship?
A doctor's mission should be not just to prevent death...but also to improve the quality of life.
That's why you treat a disease, you win, you lose.
You treat a person, I guarantee you, you win, no matter what the outcome.

**********

Now here today, this room is full of medical students.
Don't let them anesthetize you. Don't let them numb you out to the miracle of life.
Always live in awe of the glorious mechanism of the human body.
Let that be the focus of your studies and not a quest for grades...
which'll give you no idea what kind of doctor you will become.
Don't wait till you're on the ward to get your humanity back.
Start your interviewing skills. Start talking to strangers.
Talk to your friends, Talk to wrong numbers, everyone and cultivate friendships...
with those amazing people in the back of the room... nurses that could teach you.
They've been with people every day. They wade through blood and shit.
They have a wealth of knowledge, and so do the professors you respect...
the ones who are not dead from the heart up.
Share their compassion. Let that be contagious.

***********

I want to be a doctor with all my heart.
I wanted to become a doctor so I could serve others...
and because of that I've lost everything...but I've also gained everything.
I've shared the lives of patients and staff members at the hospital.
I've laughed with them. I've cried with them.
This is what I want to do with my life.
And as God is my witness...
I will still become the best damn doctor the world has ever seen.

Our job is improving the quality of life, not just delaying death.
